Thousands of people are detained every year, amongst those being survivors of abuse and torture, or those suffering with serious medical issues.
There is no time limit on how long people are detained in either prisons or purpose build detention centres, some being held for months on end, or even years. As you can imagine this has a massively detrimental impact on someone's mental health - they can be detained along with hundreds of others, not knowing if they will be there for weeks, months or years.
