What is the latest Government advice?

Calderdale Council’s most recent update can be found here: Calderdale Council Update, but below are some of the key things to remember:

  • You can now go out to exercise more than oncea day.
  • You can meet with one other person from another household outside (in a park or on a walk), as long as you stay 2 metres away from them. People cannot go to each other’s houses.
  • Loss or a change in your sense of smell or taste is a symptom of the virus, as well as a high temperature or continuous cough. You must self-isolate at home for 7 days if you have symptoms.
  • The NHS is still open! If you need a doctor call 111 or your GP, or call 999 in an emergency. If you need a dentist and you are struggling, call our advice line.

What is happening with schools and nurseries?

  • Please contact your child’s school to find out what is happening.
  • Calderdale Council has advised schools and nurseries not to open on the 1st June. This doesn’t include academies who are independent from the Council.
  • Some schools may open later in June and some may not open till September.
  • The schools that open may only take children in Reception and Years 1, 6, 10 and 12. They might take children from other years if they are vulnerable or their parents are key workers. This means children in Years 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11 may not go back to school till September.
  • If you are confused about whether or not your child’s school is open, please contact the Centre and we will help you.

Welcome to Our Centre

St. Augustine’s Centre, based on Hanson Lane in Halifax, is a community centre for anyone who needs help, advice or support.  Since 1968 we have offered a warm and welcoming environment for people to access support and advice from friendly workers and volunteers. We aim to help individuals with basic needs, and hope to build confidence to encourage participation within the community and to prevent isolation. We strive to respond to the needs of our community, offering specialist advice and support to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. We welcome everyone, regardless of faith, ethnicity or background to access the support they need and take part in social activities and events.

Donating to the Centre couldn’t be easier and you can make either a one-off payment or a monthly donation.

If you donate to St. Augustine’s Centre you can be certain that we will use your donation wisely in our work supporting the vulnerable.

Please donate here.

Thank you for your support.

Listen to our English for Life in the U.K. podcast!

English for life in the U.K. is one of the ESOL classes here at the Centre, run by a team of our volunteers. There is a weekly podcast to support this class which is available here, which we hope will be of interest to anyone wanting to improve their English and learn more about life in the U.K. There are also transcripts of most of the episodes here, and there is additional material available through our twitter account here.
